How to patch a hole in a plasterboard wall

Step by step: patching plasterboard by hole size
Fill a dent or nail hole. For shallow dents, screw holes and picture-hook marks, a flexible pre-mixed filler is all you need. Clean the edges, press the filler in with a scraper, wipe it flush, then sand lightly and touch up the paint once dry. Five minutes of work, and the only skill is patience between coats.
Mesh-patch a hole up to fist size. Hardware stores sell self-adhesive mesh patches that bridge the hole so compound has something to hold onto. Stick the patch over the cleaned hole, trowel two or three thin coats of joint compound over it, feathering each coat wider than the last, then sand smooth and repaint. Thin coats are the entire secret — one thick coat cracks as it dries and telegraphs the patch through the paint.
Board-patch anything bigger. A larger hole needs a plasterboard offcut: square up the hole, screw backing timber inside the cavity, fix the new piece to it, then tape the joins and coat them like a mesh patch. It is a patient, dusty job — very doable for a confident DIYer, and exactly the kind of small repair we knock over in a visit if you would rather not.
Know when patching is the wrong move. A water-stained or soft wall means moisture is getting in from somewhere, and patching over it just hides the evidence — find and fix the leak first, or the patch fails within months. Likewise, a crack that keeps returning through fresh filler, or cracking that arrives with sticking doors, is the house telling you something is moving underneath, and no filler fixes movement.
